Nazar Boncugu (Evil Eye)

Probably evey cultur has its own superstitions, so has Turkey. In every culture you will find people who take recourse to charms and talismans. In Turkey the Turkish Evil Eye Pendants or the "nazar boncugu" has the honour of keeping at bay the ills brought on by envious and greedy eyes. Throughout the ages, lyrics have been penned and songs have been written, but the Turks believe that these very beautiful eyes become the harbingers of misfortune and doom when they turn towards you with greed and envy.

This belief rests not only in Turkey, but also among the people of the Mediterranean countries as well as in the Indian sub-continent. Legend has that that this belief had its genesis amongst the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians. The belief in the Evil Eye may have originated with the Oriental people, but beliefs like this in some form or the other is present in every culture of the world. Thus you yourself, on countless occasions, became cautious when you didn't like the look in the other person's eyes. It is believed that the Nazar Boncugu deflects the negative energy, thus dispersing its powers. The Nazar Boncugu is blue in color and it is believed, that it is the actual blue color of the stone, which holds the real shielding power and absorbs the negative energy. Since evil can be everywhere, thehe evil eye pendant is attached everywhere, f.e.: in front of a house or office, around the neck of a newborn child, or even on farm animals. The pendant can be worn in a necklace or a bracelet.
